Kenya: Tragedy with 17 dead students – They were burned alive – 2024-09-06 07:11:36

Seventeen students were killed in a fire at a school in central Kenya, to the point where it is impossible to identify the bodies, Citizen Television reported on Friday. The fact was also confirmed by the police spokeswoman.

The fire at Hillside Endarasha Academy in Nyeri city also left 14 students injured, the station added.

Scores of rescuers are on their way to Hillside Endarasha Academy in Nyeri, spokeswoman Resila Onyango told Kenya’s Hot 96 FM radio station. At the same time, he emphasized that the authorities are going to give details later.

“We have lost 17 students in the fire incident, while 14 have been injured…” she told Reuters by phone. “Our team is currently at the scene,” he added.

At the same time, there is still the fear that the number of victims may increase.

School fires are a common occurrence in Kenyan boarding schools. In 2017, a fire at a school in the capital Nairobi killed at least nine high school students, DW reports.
