Kenya. Convictions for terrorist attack on Westgate Mall

Two Somalis were sentenced on Friday by a Kenyan court to 18 years in prison for helping to attack the Westgate shopping center in Nairobi. In the attack in 2013, to which the Somali terrorist organization Al-Shabaab confessed, 67 people were killed.

The Somalis, Mohamed Ahmed Abdi and Hassan Hussein Mustafa, were found guilty of collaborating on October 7 in organizing the attack and helping members of the commando that carried it out.

Abdi was also sentenced to an additional 15 years in prison for “possession of terrorist crime related items”, including propaganda tapes of jihadists.

Attack on downtown Westgate

The fighting for Westgate began on Saturday, September 21, 2013, when the commando stormed the heavily guarded center, fired on and threw grenades at the people there. The siege of the building by the army and the police lasted four days. The attackers were holding hostages until Tuesday morning.

During the fighting for Westgate, 240 people were injured, 67 were killed, including 61 civilians and six security forces.

The Al-Qaeda-linked terrorist organization Al-Shabaab immediately admitted organizing the attack, and the attackers demanded that the Kenyan authorities withdraw Kenyan troops from Somalia, where they fought against Islamic rebels.

In late September 2013, sources in Kenyan security services said the Kenyan authorities had been warned, including by Israel, about the increased risk of a terrorist attack shortly before the attack on Westgate.
