A Kentucky man has discovered real treasure on his farm after finding more than 700 coins dating back to the Civil War era.
The find has been dubbed the “Great Kentucky Hoard.” It includes a group of 1863 Double Eagles and hundreds of gold US dollars dated between 1850 and 1862, along with a few silver coins, according to the Numismatic Guaranty Company, which certified the coins.
In a YouTube video posted by GovMint, one of the largest collectible coin marketing companies in the United States, the unidentified man is seen digging up the coins from the treasure.
“It’s the most insane thing ever. They’re all $1, $20, $10 gold coins and, look, I’m still digging them up,” he said in disbelief.
The location where the coins were found has not been disclosed, reports the New York Post.

Ninety-five percent of the coins found are gold dollars, according to GovMint. There are also about twenty 10 dollar “Liberty” coins dating from 1840 to 1862 and about eight 20 dollar “Liberty” coins dating from 1857 to 1862.
Some of the rarest coins, the 1863-P $20 Gold Liberty, can fetch a price in the six figures, according to GovMint. 18 of these pieces were found during the search.

Experts say the coin group could be a ‘result’ of the conflict unfolding in Kentucky at the time, as many families were ‘set against each other’ and it’s possible the coins were lost .
Ryan McNutt, a conflict archaeologist at Georgia Southern University, also told Live Science that the pieces could have been “buried before the raid by Confederate John Hunt Morgan between June and July 1863.”
