Kenneth Vermeer no longer recognizes Feyenoord. The 37-year-old goalkeeper has been active in the Eredivisie again this season after an American adventure. Vermeer returns from an injury and is back in the match selection at PEC Zwolle on Sunday afternoon. The people of Zwolle watched Feyenoord’s match against Atlético Madrid with great attention and admiration.
“Under Fred Rutten we also had a very good period in which we showed really good football,” says Vermeer in conversation with De Telegraaf. ”Just before I left, we also wanted to play football, but not the football that Feyenoord plays now. I enjoy what I see now. That it is a trend break? Certainly. Hard work was always number 1 at Feyenoord, but now it is a combination of both. Work is done, but also good football is played. If a trainer has a certain vision, the audience will also go along with it. And it just keeps getting better.”
Vermeer sees opportunities for the Zwolle team on Sunday. ”European football and the competition is a world of difference. When you hear that song from the Champions League, forces emerge, but in the competition it has to come more from within themselves. Even though it doesn’t matter who they play against, they are still very concentrated. That is a credit to the staff. But whether I played here with Feyenoord or Ajax: they were always difficult matches. That’s what we have to do now and sell our skin as expensively as possible. We have a nice team and are not going to roll out the red carpet for Feyenoord. From: just come here, make it 3-0 or 4-0 and go home. Well done.”
Jansen enjoys Feyenoord
PEC Zwolle trainer Johnny Jansen has looked carefully at Feyenoord. ”I just enjoyed that, how they played football. We watched with great respect. There is simply a really good team, with so much dynamics. They play football at such a high intensity. The fact that they performed so well against Atletico, at that level, is fantastic. That’s nice to look at. No matter how you look at it: Arne and his staff have really turned it into something beautiful. What are we going to do about it? We want to ensure that we can play football, that we are incredibly disciplined and that we close the spaces well. We want to participate and really present a great competition here. With a result.”
