Kendry Páez: Youngest Player to Provide Assist in CONMEBOL Qualifiers – Records and Achievements

;oisés Caicedo and Kendry Páez understood each other very well in La Tricolor. Both have a contract with Chelsea.

As Gustavo Alfaro once opted for Moisés Caicedo, on Tuesday, September 12, 2023, Félix Sánchez Bas did so with Kendry Páez.

He sent him as a starter against Uruguay at the Rodrigo Paz Delgado stadium within the framework of the second date of the South American Qualifiers towards the Canada/United States/Mexico 2026 World Cup.

The young man from Independiente del Valle – transferred to Chelsea – did not disappoint the trust of the ‘Mister’. He showed a lot of personality against La Celeste.

He understood himself quite well with Moisés Caicedo, so that, in a corner, after making a wall with ‘Niño Moi’, he released a cross so that Félix Torres, from the floor, scored the winning goal (2-1) .

At 16 years and 131 days old, Kendry Páez is the youngest player to provide an assist in a CONMEBOL Qualifiers match since at least 2010. He surpassed Julio Enciso’s (Paraguayan) record dating back to March 2022 (with 18 years and 60 days).

Stats Perform.

It was the second record that Páez set in the game. The first was from the start when the national coach lined him up as a starter. He became the youngest debutant in the history of the Ecuadorian Senior National Team. He surpassed Jorge Bolaños, who had held the record since 1960.

For me it is no surprise. I have seen him play many games in the youth team, in his Club play important games in Libertadores. He is with us, every day he has shown his professionalism, his quality, he is a very competitive boy and, obviously, he is as old as he is, but I think he is prepared to face this type of matches, I think he has helped us a lot , has made an effort with and without the ball.

Félix Torres put on the look of a ‘9’ by scoring a double. The first was a header after a corner kick that Caicedo took at the end of the first half (45+5′).

The goal was a respite for the Ecuadorians after Agustín Canobbio’s ‘full of cold water’ (38′). The Santos Laguna center back scored five goals in 26 games with La Tri since his debut in September 2019.

It was not Enner Valencia’s day. The captain wasted a great penalty kick opportunity at the dawn of the second half. The historic scorer sent his shot outside the goal against Sergio Rochet who also did not get the direction right.

The three points that La Tri achieved were golden because it erased the negative score (-3) that the TAS imposed on it as a sanction for the Byron Castillo case.

Now with a blank slate, starting in October the ‘Everyone’s Team’ will have the possibility of starting to add with a view to qualifying for its fifth ecumenical event.

Kendry Páez’s records

He debuted in the LigaPro Serie A with the first team of Independiente del Valle on February 25, 2023 when he was 15 years and 298 days old. On May 2, 2023, against Corinthians in Brazil, he became the youngest Ecuadorian debutant in a CONMEBOL Libertadores at 15 years and 363 days. In the U20 World Cup he scored a goal against Fiji and entered the history of the tournament by being the youngest player to score at 16 years and 22 days old. In the Qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup, at 16 years and 131 days old, he became the youngest debutant of the Ecuadorian Senior National Team and the youngest player to provide an assist in the CONMEBOL World Cup.
