Kempinski Hotels is resurrecting historic hotel icons in southern Brazil: Kempinski Laje de Pedra Hotel & Residences in Canela

(Geneva) (PPS) Premiere for Kempinski Hotels: For the first time in the 125-year history of the international luxury hotel group, a resort with residences and a hotel in Brazil, South America, will complement the portfolio. The hotel, built in 1978 according to plans by Edgar Greiff, a student of the famous architect Oscar Niemeyers and master of modernism, is known far beyond the borders of the Serra Gaúcha region, as the Mercosur contract was signed here in 1992. Located on a cliff in Canela with a breathtaking view over the “Vale do Quilombo Eco Reserve”, the investors are planning to open the best and most luxurious 5-star inland resort in Brazil in 2024 after extensive renovation and modernization, together with Kempinski Hotels transferring this well-known hotel icon into the present.

The Serra Gaúcha region fits perfectly with the Kempinski brand, because it is shaped by a strong German and European culture, which, in combination with the incomparable nature, attracts over six million visitors every year. Canela is located in the center of the most attractive inland region of Brazil, surrounded by excellent, exclusive wineries, the breathtaking Gaucho gorges and the Campos de Cima da Serra (highlands of Rio Grande) with its wonderful, uninhabited pampa fields, which are criss-crossed by endless waterfalls. The dramatic natural beauty in one of the least densely populated regions on earth (population density equals that of Iceland) attracts wealthy tourists in search of adventure and close-to-nature sports.

“After the Laje de Pedra was the absolute place to be in the first decades after opening, it has recently fallen into a deep sleep, so to speak,” says Bernold Schroeder, Chief Executive Officer ad interim and CEO of Kempinski Hotels. “The aim is to bring this historical and architectural icon back to life and to position it as a top destination at the highest level with our claim to first-class quality in connection with European timeless elegance. An excellent opportunity for us to tackle the South American market with such an extraordinary project. “

360 elegant and state-of-the-art suites and residences ranging in size from 54 to 290 square meters are partly being sold, whereby the future owners can use any of the hotel’s services or rent out their apartment temporarily if they are not there themselves. International restaurants and bars with spacious terraces and spectacular views such as a steakhouse in modern gaucho style or an Italian enoteca as well as the roof top lounge or the bar with an open fireplace leave nothing to be desired. Guests can find relaxation and entertainment in the fitness center with 1,000 square meters, in the elegant spa, in the kids club or at the heated pool on the roof of the resort. Meeting and conference rooms as well as a separate theater complete the sophisticated offer.

“We are very proud to open the first Kempinski Hotel in the southern hemisphere of the American continent at the Hotel Laje de Pedra in Canela. This step will definitely position Canela and the region among the luxury destinations in South America”

said José Paim de Andrade Jr. and José Ernesto Marino Neto, the developers of Laje de Pedra.

The future Kempinski Laje de Pedra can best be reached via the Porto Alegre International Airport Salgado Filho, which serves the urban region of Porto Alegre, capital of the Rio Grande do Sul area, around 100 km away.
