The ancient Ķemeri water tower has regained its historical form. During the Soviet years, it was closed to visitors. Now it will serve again as a water tower, as well as a viewing platform and a museum.
Builders have been roaming the Ķemeri Cultural and Historical Park since last year. The water tower, built 91 years ago, which is an architectural monument of national significance, has already undergone its renovation.
“In fact, everything is authentic. What is from the building, from the building structures, from the part of the load-bearing structures. Other things. The elements of decorative decoration have been changed, the same balustrades , “says project manager Baiba Birzniece.
For the time being, the restored tower, which still serves its original function, is empty, but will soon become a public observation tower. A tourist information point will be located on the first floor and a permanent exposition on the second floor. Next, the stairs, which check not only the sport hardening, but also the girth, lead to a viewing platform located 42 meters above the ground.
“In fact, we are restoring the historic function, because even when the tower was built, it served both as a water tower and as a viewing platform. Successively we are restoring and preserving for future generations what was originally created. information point, and, fulfilling the EU conditions, we include an exposition about the history of Ķemeri resort, “Birzniece points out.
This week, an open day was also organized for the people of Jūrmala. Due to Covid restrictions, there were only five people in each group, so not everyone could enter the tower. Those who succeeded were very happy, because during the Soviet years the entrance to the tower was forbidden.
“We flew, yes we opened the door and flew with my older brother. He was attracted, now everything that is closed and inaccessible is enticing,” says Ineta, a bartender. The water tower, as well as the renovated 20-hectare park, will be fully available to visitors at the beginning of next summer.
“It’s very beautiful that the water tower was finally put in order. Beautiful view, I didn’t climb to the top, but I liked it,” says Ilga, a burger.
