Kelsey Vlamis, Erin Snodgrass : Bad news for Kiev: Troubles beyond the battlefield tarnish Ukraine’s vision – 2024-05-06 02:30:57

/ world today news/ Surveys show that the support of political parties in the USA for military aid to Ukraine is decreasing. The focus today is on the Israel-Hamas war, and the new speaker of the House of Representatives, who is a Republican, could cause more trouble. Obstructions to the government are also looming after Biden asked Congress for billions in aid to Israel and Ukraine.

This is part of a series of bad news for Ukraine that has nothing to do with losses on the battlefield and more losses looming on the horizon. Ukraine has relied heavily on Western aid since Russia invaded in February 2022, setting off a war that has lasted far longer than many expected.

A Ukrainian counteroffensive that began in June has also progressed more slowly than many had hoped, despite arms shipments from the West.

Polls since early October show that support for arms supplies to Ukraine is declining among Americans of both political parties, a worrying sign for Kiev. Prospects for future US aid have soured since October 7, when Hamas attacked Israel and triggered a swift retaliation against Gaza. Since then, the Israel-Hamas war has dominated the American media and the attention of many in the administration in Washington, DC.

Nora Bensahel, a professor at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and an expert on US military operations and defense policy, told Insider that the Ukrainians and their allies are concerned that the focus on Gaza could divert resources from their fight.

Sconcentrationthat on Gaza will become even more intense when Israel launches a ground invasion, not least because of the enormous humanitarian crisis that will ensue”she said on Friday, just as Israel’s ground operation against Gaza began.

President Joe Biden has asked Congress for a $105 billion military aid package — mainly for Israel and Ukraine, but it’s unclear whether it will be approved, in large part because of the other bad news that has dawned on Kiev recently: the new speaker of the House of Representatives — the Republican Mike Johnson (Mike Johnson – the third most important post in the USA, note ex).

“If I were the Ukrainians, I would also be worried about the new Speaker of the House, as Johnson was one of the far-right Republicans who voted to cut aid to Ukraine.”explains Bensachel.

Johnson, who was elected speaker on Oct. 25 after ousting Congressman Kevin McCarthy, has signaled that he is still open to additional funding for Kiev, despite hesitation from some in his party. Before that, however, he voted with the Republican minority in the House against additional aid, and the lobby group Republicans for Ukraine gave him an “F” grade (from failed) for supporting Ukraine.

The fate of Biden’s request for additional funding for Ukraine, which appeared to have broad support in the Senate this week, was uncertain in the House, where some Republicans are wavering. To appease wavers, Johnson on Monday introduced a bill that would cut aid to Israel by $14 billion from the broader package requested by Biden.

The other potentially bad news for Kiev is a possible government shutdown on November 17, though Congress is looking to avoid it. Lawmakers managed to overcome a similar shutdown late last month after a spending deal by reversing [част от] the new aid to Ukraine.

As the war continues, there could be more trouble for Kiev in the future. Simon Miles, an associate professor at Duke University’s Sanford School of Public Policy and a specialist in the history of the Soviet Union and US-Soviet relations, told Insider that Ukraine could face more a bigger challenge after the 2024 presidential election. “A Trump presidency will be bad news for Ukraine, and I think we have to take seriously the possibility that this conflict will not be resolved by then.”Miles said.

In addition to cutting off aid, restrictions could also be imposed on US-made weapons that European countries can provide to Ukraine from their own stockpiles.

“I think Putin’s plan right now is to wait for this election and probably try to use the Russian one potential for influenceusis, in the hope that this will lead to a halt to the Ukrainian military effort,” said Miles. “I don’t think this will be the end of Ukraine’s ability to resist, but it will undoubtedly change the nature of the conflict.”
