“Kelsen / Kohn” -sager: Controversial FPÖ politician becomes Federal Councilor

It has been known since Monday evening who the Vienna FPÖ is sending to the Federal Council: After an interlude as the Wiedner District Councilor, lawyer Johannes Hübner is celebrating his comeback on the federal political stage.

In 2017, the then foreign policy spokesman for the FPÖ made headlines in the National Council because he is said to have used anti-Semitic codes. As audio recordings show, Huebner had given a speech the year before in Thuringia, Germany at the “Society for Free Publishing eV (GfP)”. The German constitution protection classifies this as right-wing extremist.

As reported, Huebner referred to Hans Kelsen, the main thinker behind the Austrian constitution, in the said speech as “Hans Kohn”. According to the documentation archive of the Austrian Resistance (DÖW), the “bon mot”, which was greeted with laughter at the event, is a mockery of Kelsen known in right-wing circles and is intended to indicate his Jewish origin. In fact, Kelsen’s name was never Kohn.
