Kellerbühne Zistersdorf: Cinema like back then – museum association breathes life into the cinema

The old cinema came back to life for one night thanks to the commitment of the Zistersdorf Museum Association. It opened in 1950, closed in 2004 and woke up for one night on November 16, 2024.

After the opening by the Chairman of the museum association Rupert Mandl and its Deputy Karina Goldmann kidnapped Karl and Martin Zellhoferthe father-son author team, who have already written several books about the Weinviertel, presented the interested audience with their anecdotal talk about the past of the Weinviertel cinemas.

For example, we found out that there was a “Parisian ideal cinema” in Haugsdorf, that there was a note in the Seefeld-Kadolz cinema that said “Certain young people have to behave calmly and decently during the performance” and that in the Hohenau cinema back in the day Police officers used flashlights to check the young people’s IDs during the performance in the dark cinema.

Karina Goldmann gave insights into how the “Cinema of Back then” project came about.

“It’s a project close to my heart. I’ve been carrying the idea around with me for 5 years. It came about when I was with Rupert in Großkrut at the book presentation of “Verschwundene Kinos im Weinviertel” by Messrs. Zellhofer.”

Numerous cinema relics, such as historical tickets, cinema posters and advertising slides, gave visitors a cinematic feeling like in the fifties.

And to take the “cinema like back then” feeling to the extreme, the Zistersdorf Museum Association presented the famous Hollywood classic “Some Like It Hot” on the big screen as the crowning finale. Well supplied with popcorn and cola, the cinema-goers traveled back in time to the 1950s and then made their way home in a good mood. A very successful, nostalgic evening at the cinema.
