Keiino Star Alexandra Rotan Talks Christmas, New Apartment, and More

While many people have probably rushed around to buy Christmas presents and secure the best ribs for the big night, there are others who have spent the run-up to Christmas traveling around the country to bring real Christmas spirit to the people with music.

Throughout December, Dagbladet’s celebrity editors have had a chat with several of Norway’s well-known and beloved celebrities in the “Julekjappis” column. They are asked questions about everything from New Year’s resolutions to the worst Christmas memory.

Lightens the veil about the lover

Now it’s Keiino star Alexandra Rotan’s (28) turn.

This year, Rotan has, for the first time, put on concerts alone. She has also sung with Kurt Nilsen, something she has dreamed of for a long time. In addition, she can be seen as presenter of “Christmas Eve at Prøysen” on Viaplay.

As if it wasn’t enough in the middle of the Christmas season, the artist is in the middle of moving chaos. She and her boyfriend have bought their first flat together, and will thus become cohabitants.

– I think I had one day off before Christmas, and it went to take over the apartment. So it’s quite intense during the day, but nice too! After all, we have bought our first Christmas tree together, and it’s very nice with things that happen for the first time.

The former “MGP” winner reveals that she and her new partner will not be together on Christmas Eve.

– We will celebrate Christmas Eve with each of our families. But the run-up to Christmas will be incredibly cozy now that we have our own place, and can create our own traditions and enjoy the time. At first among cardboard boxes and such, but we will hopefully be able to move in fairly quickly.

Not materialistic

– It is tough financially for many now. Does it affect Christmas for you?

– Had trouble breathing

– I notice a little bit about ticket sales and concerts and such – that things are going a little slower than before. But then I’ve made sure that my concerts don’t cost the world. I want everyone to have the opportunity to come.

– So I’m not very materialistic either. I notice it now when I go to buy Christmas presents, and when I arranged a calendar for my girlfriend – that I haven’t spent a lot of money on it. I have learned to find new solutions for things that don’t cost much.

Traditions

Christmas is filled with traditions, and everyone celebrates in their own way. But does the 28-year-old have any traditions that differ from the “usual”?

– I don’t want to say we don’t have it. We are a family that takes great care of each other, and we are always ourselves. When we finish eating on Christmas Eve, I sit down at the piano, even though I don’t really play the piano. Then I, little brother and little sister sing a little for grandma and grandpa, while mom and dad do the dishes.

New step with the girlfriend

– Then we have a fixed tradition every year of porridge with almonds on Christmas Eve, where both grandma and grandpa come, and it’s very nice, the artist continues, who says that what’s a bit funny about her family is that they have an incredibly over-decorated Christmas tree.

– Mum has been a flight attendant for many years, and has bought a lot of decorations. So this tree here has so many decorations that you hardly even see the tree. At the latest yesterday, I received a message from my mother who said she had bought 50 meters of glitter railing. That speaks for itself.

When it comes to Christmas movies, “Home Alone” is the favourite. She is also very fond of watching “Three Nuts for Cinderella” on Christmas Eve, which becomes a kind of “communal cinema”, as she calls it, across the country.

– Do you have a particularly good Christmas memory?

– I was very happy to visit the Christmas tree, a tradition that is unfortunately not very common anymore. It’s such a shame, because I think it was so much fun to go door to door and sing a bit, you also got a clementine or gingerbread as a thank you.

– Terrible

There were probably many people who were afraid of Santa as children, and there is one Christmas in particular that Rotan remembers particularly well. When asked what her worst Christmas memory is, she answers jokingly:

– Fortunately, I don’t have many of them, but I remember being terrified of Santa. Because there was a year Santa came with a terrible plastic mask, and I thought it was terribly scary. So then I hid under the table. Fortunately, I didn’t have any trauma after that, and now I’m very happy with Santa, she laughs.

This is how it went with “The Holiday” stars

When it comes to New Year’s resolutions, it’s not something Rotan is too fond of – and for a very special reason.

– I can’t hold them. I’m more of a planning person, and have a lot planned for 2024 that hasn’t been announced yet. I want to make even more music, write even more songs, explore who I am as an artist both with Keiino and alone, and that’s what it’s all about.

In conclusion, she says that 2023 has been a very good year.

– I have made great strides both in my career and in my private life. I’ve been a presenter for the first time, written a lot of new music and done things I haven’t done before. I have also bought a flat with a girlfriend, simply found love.
