Kees van der Spek attacked with screwdriver: ‘He suddenly attacked me’

Kees van der Spek’s life is not always a bed of roses. The producer also experienced perilous moments during the recordings of his program Oplichtersgepakt.

Crime journalist and TV producer Kees van der Spek regularly finds himself in difficult situations. For years he has been making the program Oplichters Aangepakt and during the recordings Van der Spek does not shy away from confronting swindlers, fraudsters and other villains in a characteristic way. Kees always goes in with a straight leg. And sometimes the same goes for the people he tackles.

Also in Italy, where the producer is currently filming a new season. A confrontation with a suspected fraudster led to an attack with a screwdriver. Kees shared a few photos of the incident on Instagram.

“Another day at the office”, says Van der Spek. “Recordings for the new season with a fierce confrontation in southern Europe. From October 7 on RTL5.”

Fortunately, the programme maker was somewhat unharmed. Kees claims that he did get a punch in the throat from the man in question, but ‘he didn’t stab with the screwdriver’, he tells Show newsVan der Spek has filed a complaint of assault.

Commotion

Earlier this year, a broadcast of Oplichters Aangepakt – and especially its aftermath – caused quite a stir. A man who was unmasked in Kees’s program as someone who had allegedly defrauded an elderly couple of tens of thousands of euros, took his own life the day after the broadcast. Kees did not mention the man by name, and his face was also blurred, but viewers were still able to identify him. This is said to have led to threats against him. After it became known that the man had taken his own life, the broadcast was taken offline.

It came as a blow: the death of a man who was unmasked in Kees van der Spek’s program Oplichters Aanpak. The Dutch entrepreneur reportedly took his own life after the episode in which he played a role was broadcast. René van der Gijp has his own opinion about it.

“I feel incredibly sad,” Van der Spek responded in a statement. “This transcends the importance of my program. Journalistically and legally, we made no mistakes or spread any inaccuracies in the broadcast. But nobody wants these kinds of outcomes. I am very upset about that. We wish the relatives much strength with this loss.”

Among others, René van der Gijp lashed out at Kees and his program. He labeled the way Van der Spek makes TV as ‘scoring on other people’s backs’. The football analyst has more in common with someone like John van den Heuvel, because he focuses on the Mocro mafia and people who kidnap children.
