Kees Stevens in deep sadness: ‘No one left for me’

“I really don’t know what mourning is,” Kees said. “People always say, ‘You need grief.’ But what should you do? Should you sit still and stop living? In fact, sometimes when I’m alone in the car or playing music, it’s kind of weird.

A year before Miep died, John’s father died. “It’s intense that it all comes together so quickly. There’s something gone that won’t come back and that feels heavy.” The loss of Kees’ own parents is also difficult. “There’s no one left for me now. My foundation is gone. I grew up with my grandparents, they raised me. I won’t get that original love from anyone anymore.”

The love between him and John is different, according to Kees. “That true unconditional love, that someone would go through fire for you, is gone. Now I have to do it alone.”
