Keep Track of Child Development

JAKARTAIndonesia is a country with the highest Case Fatality Rate (CFR) for children due to COVID-19 in Asia Pacific (IDAI, 2020). Even though it is not the most at risk group, data shows that children can also be infected with the COVID-19 virus (CDC, 2020), so it is necessary to take precautions that can affect children’s health.

Dr. Annisa Rahmania Yulman, Sp.A reminded parents to carry out routine monitoring of children’s growth and development by measuring body weight, length / height, and head circumference. Regarding child development monitoring, there is a monitoring form known as KPSP (Developmental Pre-Screening Questionnaire).

This KPSP has a red flag / warning sign or a danger sign, which is an indicator when a child experiences developmental disorders. If there are signs of danger, parents should immediately consult a doctor.

“Monitoring the growth and development of children can also be monitored by parents using the PrimaKu application which has been developed by the Indonesian Pediatric Association,” said dr. Annisa in the 30th Healthy Talk Public Seminar held by RSUI.

Regarding the theme of infection, dr. Annisa Mentioned some tips for preventing infectious diseases that often occur in children, including ARI (Acute Respiratory Infection), diarrhea, and fever.

“These infectious diseases can be prevented by adopting a clean and healthy lifestyle, including maintaining personal and environmental hygiene (regularly washing hands, keeping food and drinks clean, ensuring good air circulation in the house),” said dr. Annisa. (Also read: Deadly Selfie Trends: Narcissistic Ending Lives)

In addition, optimizing nutritional aspects (exclusive breastfeeding, consumption of nutritionally balanced foods, and implementing food safety aspects in cooking), getting adequate rest, and carrying out immunizations according to schedule. In general, multivitamins and minerals or immune-enhancing supplements are not needed in children who grow normally and want to eat a variety of foods. The best natural source of various nutrients is the food that children consume themselves.

In general, a variety of children’s diets including snacks can meet the daily needs of children, including when children eat various fortified foods such as cereals, milk and juices. Excessive vitamin administration has the potential to cause toxicity. Keep in mind, many people are infected with the Covid-19 virus but do not show significant symptoms. The person can still transmit the virus through airway droplets from their mouth or nose when they are talking, laughing, sneezing, or coughing. Sparks containing the virus can be inhaled by another person 1-2 meters away. The longer and closer the child is when interacting with other people will increase the risk of the child being infected. Especially if the child is in a closed room, because it is more difficult to keep a distance from other people around him. (Sri Noviarni)
