General Chairperson of the Central Executive Board of the Indonesian Pediatrician Association (PP IDAI), Dr. Piprim Basarah Yanuarso, SpAK revealed that there was an increase in cases of Multisystem Inflammatory System in Children (MIS-C) in Indonesia.
“The latest data shows an increase in COVID-19 cases in infants and children who need treatment,” said Piprim in a press release received by Health Liputan6.com on Friday, (7/8/2022).
“In addition, there is also an increase in cases of the Multisystem Inflammatory System in Children and the potential for Long COVID-19 cases in children in Indonesia,” he continued.
According to Piprim, Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 which are much more infectious than the previous variants provide the potential to cause the next wave of COVID-19 cases.
Moreover, as is known, especially children under the age of six in Indonesia have not been able to receive the COVID-19 vaccination.
The head of IDAI’s COVID-19 Task Force, Dr Yogi Prawira, SpAK revealed that children have the same risk as adults to be infected with COVID-19.
“Children have the same risk as adults to be infected with COVID-19, and even have the potential to experience complications of MIS-C and long COVID-19, so prevention is the main priority,” said Yogi.
According to Yogi, good habits such as complying with health protocols during the COVID-19 pandemic should be maintained. In fact, it should be further improved considering that currently COVID-19 is experiencing an increase.
“Health protocols have proven to be effective in preventing various infectious diseases, including COVID-19,” he said.
