“Israel does not place its hopes on a deal with an extremist regime like (Iran). We have already seen how much this agreement is worth with North Korea, ”Netanyahu said at the memorial service of the Battle of Tel Hai in 1920.
“With or without a deal, we will do everything so that (Iran is not) armed with nuclear weapons,” he added as quoted by Antara. Sputnik, Wednesday (24/2/2021).
Netanyahu’s remarks came after he held a strategic meeting that included Defense Minister Benny Gantz, Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi, IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Aviv Kochavi, and Mossad chief Yossi Cohen. The meeting discussed the Biden administration’s willingness to negotiate with Iran on a nuclear deal.
In 2015, Iran signed a Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) with the permanent members of the UN Security Council, Germany and the European Union. This agreement requires Iran to scale back its nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief. The Trump administration unilaterally withdrew the United States (US) from the deal in 2018 and reimposed sanctions on Tehran.
This prompted Iran to announce that it would gradually abandon its obligations under the JCPOA deal, first of all, limits on uranium enrichment.
