Dhoho Airport Set to Transform Southern Java’s Connectivity and Economy
Kediri, East Java – Dhoho Airport, a groundbreaking project in Kediri, East Java, was inaugurated on Friday, marking a significant milestone in enhancing connectivity and spurring economic growth in southern Java. Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, emphasized the airport’s importance as the first pilot project under the government and business entity cooperation (KPBU) scheme in Indonesia. This new airport symbolizes a strong partnership between the public and private sectors, aiming to reshape the flight landscape of the region.
A New Era of Connectivity
In his address during the inauguration, Minister Pandjaitan highlighted, “Dhoho Airport in Kediri reflects effective collaboration between the public sector and the private sector.” This airport, part of a broader development initiative, is expected to significantly alter the previously non-existent flight map of southern Java, thus alleviating reliance on Juanda International Airport, located in Surabaya.
The addition of a new toll road connecting the airport to Kediri will further streamline travel, reducing transit time to just one hour. This improved accessibility is anticipated to enhance economic activities and support the mobility of residents and visitors alike.
Strategic Importance for Religious Travel
Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi echoed the sentiment of its strategic importance, noting that Dhoho Airport will be the second major airport in southern Java, alongside Juanda International Airport. He also noted the potential to support Hajj and Umrah flights, stating, “In the near future, we will also coordinate with the Ministry of Religious Affairs to build a Hajj dormitory here.” This initiative aims to accommodate the increasing number of pilgrims from the region, further amplifying the airport’s importance for religious travel.
Contribution to Regional Development
Istata T. Siddharta, President Director of PT Surya Dhoho Investama (SDhI), the airport’s developer, referred to Dhoho Airport as “a gift to the nation.” He elaborated that the airport presents a tangible contribution to the Indonesian economy by broadening access to southern East Java regions, including Nganjuk, Kediri, Tulungagung, Trenggalek, Ponorogo, and Madiun districts.
The airport commands a runway stretching 3,300 meters in length and 45 meters in width, enabling it to accommodate wide-body jet aircraft, thus facilitating international flights. The initial passenger terminal is set to handle 1.5 million passengers per year, with plans to expand capacity to 10 million passengers annually, positioning Dhoho Airport as a key player in the region’s aviation sector.
Economic Implications and Job Creation
The establishment of Dhoho Airport is expected to catalyze new business opportunities across various sectors such as transportation, tourism, and hospitality. Additionally, it is anticipated to provide a boost to agriculture, livestock, and plantation industries in the surrounding areas.
As more than 20,000 passengers have already traversed through the airport since its soft launch on April 5, 2024, and with 175 aircraft movements recorded, the initial operational phase demonstrates promising engagement with the public.
The Future of Dhoho Airport
The broader implications of Dhoho Airport extend beyond mere travel convenience; it symbolizes a paradigm shift towards a more integrated and thriving economy in southern Java. As the region cultivates its infrastructure and connectivity, it opens avenues for investment and development opportunities that align with Indonesia’s national economic vision.
The inauguration of Dhoho Airport is just the beginning of a transformative journey for Kediri and southern Java. As the region looks towards the future, it will be fascinating to observe how this new hub fosters economic growth and reinforces connectivity within Indonesia.
