In 1994 the Dutch director booked Jan de Bont a great success with the action movie Speed met Keanu Reeves in the main lead role. A second part flopped without Reeves and this week Bont was asked if he likes a third part.
In conversation with Collider, Bont said that a third is certainly possible. It depends on the story and according to him an important condition is the return of the most famous faces.
[i]”It depends on what the story is like, I guess. Overall I’m not a big fan of sequels. My contract said I had to do a sequel. If you have to, then you have to have the cast who would want that. Otherwise you have to make a whole new movie.[i]
“Because part of the first was so much about him. And was clumsy too. He was the hero and that worked really well with him, but not with other actors. And it’s really hard to get that same kind of feeling back. [in een vervolg].”
Speed a success, Speed 2 a flop
The first part from 1994 was a great success. With a budget of $ 30 million, more than $ 350 million was raised at the worldwide cinema ticket offices. In Speed 2: Cruise Control returned alone Sandra Bullock back. That film, also from De Bont, cost between $ 110 and 160 million and did not go beyond $ 165 million.
