Latvia has no doubt that in case of danger, other NATO countries will guarantee us security, because failure to provide assistance would mean the collapse of NATO, which the member states of the organization cannot afford, stressed Jānis Kažociņš, Adviser to President Egils Levits, on LTV Morning Panorama this morning.

According to Kažociņš, we can thank God that Latvia had the opportunity to join NATO, which was also used, and accordingly the country currently has high security guarantees.

The expert emphasized that in the event of an attack on a member state, NATO could not afford not to provide assistance, otherwise the organization would collapse, which in turn would mean the loss of influence of both Europe and the United States. Kažociņš noted that NATO needs to demonstrate its ability to cope with the situation, as China, for example, is looking at it when assessing its capabilities.

Speaking about the Russian attack on Ukraine, Kažociņš assessed that it was surprising how unprofessional the Russian army had carried out the attack. This has led to the best weapons already being spent, leading the Kremlin to inhumane, use “silly bombs” from planes, resulting in close civilian casualties and blatant war crimes.

However, the expert acknowledged that Russia’s leader Vladimir Putin is no longer a way back, as long as he is attacking Ukraine.

Kazakiņš acknowledged that this is a serious question that the public will ask more and more loudly – why NATO does not establish a closed area for flights over Ukraine. Explaining the situation, Kažociņš admitted that this is not done, because such a decision would mean actual involvement in the war with Russia, which in turn would mean “some kind of nuclear weapons exchange”, because Putin has no other argument, because Russia’s conventional armed forces are nowhere near NATO.

NATO does not want a nuclear war, so it provides all other possible support to Ukraine, Kažociņš explained. He noted that the transfer of warplanes to Ukraine is a complicated process, as it also includes training, logistics, etc. processes that cannot be done in a short time.

Kazocins noted that after less than two weeks of war, Russia no longer has the military resources to try to attack NATO in any other way. In turn, “gunslinger” in the country’s rhetoric is part of an information war, simply trying to intimidate the rest of the world.
