A lecture dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the discovery of the tomb of Sevtus III in the Golyama Kosmatka mound will be given in Kazanlak.
The public lecture of Diana Dimitrova from the National Archaeological Institute with Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences will be on November 12 in the lobby of the Historical Museum “Spark” and the Art Gallery.
20 years ago, in September and October, the team of the Tracological Expedition for Mound Studies under the leadership of Dr. Georgi Kitov studied the Golyama Kosmatka mound in the territory of the town of Shipka.
In the southern periphery of the mound, under a huge stone pile, a bronze head of a male statue was discovered, which later turned out to be a portrait of the Odrysian ruler Sevtus III himself.
As the work progressed, a monumental stone building was discovered, consisting of two facades, a long corridor and three chambers. In the last sarcophagus-like chamber, numerous objects were found, placed as grave goods in the symbolic tomb of the ruler.
This discovery then remains epoch-making to this day.
