Kazakhstan is harshly suppressing protests. Police have announced that they have liquidated dozens of demonstrators – ČT24 – Czech Television

The Russian state agency TASS, referring to state television, said that at least twelve police officers had been killed and 353 law enforcement officials had been injured in clashes with protesters in Almaty. One of the killed police officers was cut off, which “testifies to the terrorist and extremist character of the bandit groups,” according to TASS, the Chabar-24 television station, referring to the police headquarters communiqué.

The Interior Ministry said on Wednesday that eight members of the security forces had died in riots in several regions of the country and another 317 had been injured.

The Kazakh authorities do not inform about possible victims on the side of the demonstrators. However, a police spokeswoman in Almaty spoke of the “liquidation” of dozens of people attacking government buildings in the city. “Dozens of attackers have been killed and we are identifying them,” said a spokeswoman, who said the rioters had tried to break into police buildings in the city. Some foreign media interpret her statement as confirmation that the clashes have claimed dozens of deaths among protesters.

The Kazakh Ministry of Health announced that more than a thousand people were injured in the riots in the country, almost four hundred of whom had to be hospitalized.

Several armored vehicles drove into Almaty’s main square early on Thursday morning, and dozens of soldiers were on the scene. As they approached the crowd, gunfire was heard, and the BBC’s Russian-language version was intense. Reuters writes that the situation has calmed down since then.
