Protests in Kazakhstan against the rise in the price of propane-butane, the main fuel for many cars in the country, flooded the country, and tonight clashes broke out with police using shock grenades. Journalists report that the Internet has begun to shut down and block independent media and mobile applications are communication.

Since the beginning of the year, the price of gas has doubled to 120 tenge (0.24 euros) per liter, and protests began on January 2nd, spreading in the following days to key cities in the country. Authorities today promised to reduce prices to 50 tenge (0.10 euros), but the demonstrations did not stop.

Tonight, according to GlobalCheck in the capital Almaty, cable and mobile internet was turned off. Telocomes report that the interruption is related to security and “for reasons beyond our control.” Telegram, WhatsApp and Signal cannot be used on the territory of Kazakhstan at 10 pm, the online edition Vlast writes, quoted by Novaya Gazeta.

President Kasim-Jomart Tokayev addressed the dissidents, offering them a dialogue, urging them to be prudent, not to succumb to provocations “inside and out” and assured that “power will not fall”. “Do not follow the calls of destructive people interested in undermining the stability and unity of our society,” Tokayev said.

The Ministry of Energy explained that the consumption of proban-butane is growing every year, but not the volume of its production.

There have also been reports of protests from Aktau, Atyrau, Taraze, Aktobe, Karaganda, Uralsk and Zhanaozen, an oil refining center that has sparked discontent. In many places, protesters are insulting government officials trying to talk to them. In Aktau, journalists noted that the “initiative group” that came in to talk to the authorities actually consisted of several deputies and representatives of state media.

Reports of casualties and detainees, including the leader of an unregistered party, are conflicting.
