Government Kazakhstan declared January 10, 2022 as the day mourning nationwide to honor the victims of the massive protests across the country.
“In light of the large number of deaths due to tragic events in several regions of the country, the President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has decided to declare January 10, 2022 as a day of national mourning,” said presidential spokesman Berik Uali via his official Facebook page as quoted by Anadolu Agency, Sunday (Sunday). 9/1).
He said the relevant decision would be published on the Akorda presidential website.
As is known, protests against the increase in the price of gas fuel (LPG) have developed into massive riots across Kazakhstan over the past week.
The anger of the demonstrators was widespread due to a number of factors. The triggers are dissatisfaction with the authoritarian government, corruption that is prevalent and makes wealth concentrated among the political elite, social and economic inequality, including the lack of real implementation of democracy.
According to the Kazakh Interior Ministry, at least 18 security officers and 26 protesters have lost their lives during the unrest. A total of 4,266 people were detained, including citizens of neighboring countries.
Previously, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev declared a state of emergency in major cities, such as Almaty, Mangystau and the capital Nur-Sultan since Wednesday (5/1). He then updated the status to a national emergency on the same day.
The status is valid from 5 to 19 January. The regulation will also apply a curfew from 23.00 to 07.00 am local time. Restrictions in and out of the two cities are also under strict supervision.
