What is Kawasaki disease?
The disease mainly affects children under 5 years of age. Also known as “mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome,” the condition can cause some blood vessels around the heart to swell and, if not treated in time, could be fatal. Children are treated with immunoglobulin, a medicine made from donated plasma. The high number of cases of the disease prompted a demand for more plasma donations, to help young people recover from it. Without treatment, about 1 in 4 children with Kawasaki disease can develop heart complications, which can be fatal in about 2 to 3 percent of cases, according to the NHS.
How do you detect symptoms of the disease?
A child with Kawasaki disease is likely to have a high fever that lasts 5 or more days, and possibly one or more of the following symptoms:
rash. Swollen glands in the neck. Dry, red, cracked lips. A red, swollen, bumpy tongue (strawberry tongue). Redness inside the mouth and at the back of the throat. Swelling and redness of the hands and feet. red eyes
