Kaunas Airport Expansion to Double Passenger Capacity by 2025, Says Lithuanian Transport Minister

The expansion of Kaunas airport is a turning point in the development of Lithuanian airports, as they will double their capacity to serve passengers by 2025, with the potential number of passengers exceeding ten million, Lithuanian Transport Minister Marjus Skuodis announced on Friday.

“The expansion of the Kaunas airport terminal and platform until 2025 will symbolize a major turning point in the system of all our airports, as all Lithuanian airports will be ready to serve twice as many passengers – more than ten million,” the minister told journalists in Kaunas.

As Skuodis said, the capacity of Kaunas airport will be increased from one million to two million passengers per year, meanwhile, the passenger service capacity of Vilnius airport will increase to eight million passengers per year and Palanga airport can serve half a million passengers per year.

The Lithuanian airport operator company “Lietuvos oro uostai” plans to announce procurement worth 30 million euros next week for the expansion of the passenger terminal and the northern apron of Kaunas Airport.

Meanwhile, in January, the construction of a new passenger departure terminal at Vilnius Airport began, which will allow to increase the number of passengers served by the airport and increase the quality of service. By the end of 2024, the area of ​​Vilnius airport’s passenger terminals will be increased by a third, they will be able to serve 2,400 passengers per hour, which is more than twice the number than at present.

It is planned that passengers will be able to start using the new terminal in 2025.

It has already been reported that 5.35 million passengers were served at the three international airports of Lithuania last year, or 2.2 times more than in 2021, while the amount of cargo last year increased by 4% to 21,000 tons.

Last year, 51,000 flights were served at three airports, or 48% more than in 2021.
