Katy Perry (39) will receive the special ‘Vanguard Award’ during the MTV VMAs on September 11. The organization calls her ‘a musical powerhouse and a true pop icon’. The American singer will also perform during the awards show for the first time since 2017.
The award is given annually to artists and directors of music videos. Last year, Shakira received the award. Previous winners include Madonna and Jennifer Lopez. When the award was first presented in 1984, David Bowie, The Beatles and director Richard Lester shared the award.
The MTV VMAs were originally scheduled for Tuesday, September 10, but were postponed by a day due to the debate between presidential candidates Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. Taylor Swift, Megan Thee Stallion, SZA and Dua Lipa are among those up for a Video Music Award.
Katy released her latest single ‘Woman’s World’ in July, but also announced a sixth studio album called ‘143’. She received a lot of criticism.
