She was the only candidate for the position. In order for a candidate to be elected president of the association, he or she had to vote for at least two-thirds of the members of the congress present. In total, 150 ballot papers were prepared for the congress, but 84 were issued. 64 members voted for Sproģi, but her candidacy was not supported by 19 present.

Addressing the congress, Sproģe emphasized that she wanted the LSA to be a strong organization at both the national and international levels and to be able to influence decisions.

She also emphasized that not only the board of the association and the head of the organization should be strong, but each of its members.

She emphasized that the representation in the interests of students must be continuous. “We can’t stop and hope that someone else will take care of us,” Sproģe said.

Sproģe would like the association to focus more on discrimination and mental health issues, which she said the association has avoided so far. She would also like the LSA’s decision-making power to be stronger. According to her, internal documents should also be arranged.

The association was informed that Sproge was elected to the LSA board in early 2018, when he became vice president. In April of the same year, she was elected to the position of Head of International for the first time, and is now continuing her duties for a third term.

Sproģe will take up the duties of the President of the LSA on October 21.

The term of office of the former President of the LSA, Justine Shirina, will end on October 20 – so the students’ representatives decided at the extraordinary congress that took place this spring. Shirina has been President since December 2018. She stressed in Congress that it had been a great honor for her to lead the association during this time.

LSA is an organization that represents the interests of Latvian students on a national and international scale. The organization is a partner of higher education policy makers on issues that affect students. The LSA is made up of university and college student self-governments, and its role is defined in the Law on Higher Education Institutions.

The Congress is the highest decision-making body of the organization, which consists of LSA members, student self-governments, delegated representatives. It is attended by more than 100 representatives of student self-governments from Latvian higher education institutions, whose student self-governments are members of LSA.
