Musician Katrīna Gupalo released the song “Dur prom” and a video directed by Marta Elīna Martinsones with actor Ārta Krūmiņas in the lead role. The new song touches on such important topics at the moment: freedom, independence, national self-confidence and European thinking.
The song “Dur Prom” can be heard and watched in three different ways: just listening to it, it sounds like a light, breezy pop song with a memorable chorus and Katrina’s “feline French” voice on the trumpet; upon watching the video, it transforms into a sultry song with a message encouraging women’s independence; delving into this story and knowing the explanations of the authors themselves regarding “Shut up”, the song and its clip already acquire a completely different, much deeper meaning. “In your dreams I was small and shy, but Spiedola’s ferocity sleeps in my closet”, reads the main line of the song.
Creating something after the ambitious and exciting project “Latvia for Ukraine: Resistance” seemed almost impossible to its author Katrīna Gupalo, but the war for European freedom in Ukraine continues, so the musician and her creative team decided to talk about what is happening in Latvia and Ukraine in a completely different aesthetic, thereby focusing the attention of an even larger audience. “Regardless of our profession, each of us can find a way to help Ukrainians, even if we don’t know how to shoot, drive tanks or treat battlefield casualties. Everyone can give the time, imagination and energy to continue supporting the Ukraine and prevent the world from turning a blind eye to what is happening,” says Katrina Gupalo.
The song “Dur prom” was created in the sound recording studio “Varslaff ‘n’ Edwolf”, its co-author and producer is the Ukrainian musician Edgars Vilcāns, who worked in one of the largest recording studios in Ukraine before the war of Kiev ” Mozgi” and collaborated with famous Ukrainian musicians. “Dur away” is the first joint work of Katrina and Edgar. “Foreground in the composition is the story of the denunciation and expulsion of a violent man, but if you look deeper, you can see the expulsion of the occupiers from a land hungry for freedom,” says the public relations team of the musician.
The video was shot in the “AOK City” bar and the “Totaldobže” art center, it was made by a team of more than half a hundred people, led by director Marta Elina Martinson. “Katrina and I have wanted to work together for a long time, and I am very happy that this desire has translated into a clip for the song “Shut Up”, which talks about painful topics with the lightness characteristic of pop music. A woman who breaks free from toxic relationships, finding one’s power, all in the glitter of the glitter! But what draws me most is Katrina’s ability to weave into her music the most painful topic for me and the entire world right now: the vile Russia’s attack on Ukraine. It’s not a war, it’s a crime against humanity, against which you have to fight with all your might, just like against the aggressor played by Đirts Krūmins”, says Marta Elīna Martinsone.
