Tom and Kato of The Starlings have had a dramatic period. They lost their baby at the end of last year. In ‘De Cooke & Verhulst Show’ they talked candidly about that moment.

Kato Callebaut (30) said the last few years have been difficult. “First I lost my grandmother, who practically raised us. And a year after that my mom. In the meantime we also got married, so it has also had very positive things. But right after the wedding we had a miscarriage, which was a bit of the final blow for me. I was completely devastated by that, which makes sense, I think.”
Tom Dice (32) said he had a feeling of powerlessness because “that mostly happens to her”. “I don’t feel it the way she does. You can be there, but most of all you see her sadness.”
Kato said that it was not possible to write music for two months. But ultimately on their new record several songs are influenced by the drama. “Music is a little healing for us.”
According to Kato, she couldn’t talk about the miscarriage at first, but she actually needs it to express feelings. “It is also a very big taboo. Especially if it’s at the very beginning, when friends and family don’t know yet, there are a lot of people who keep it quiet because it might feel a bit like failure or something. But it has been there, something that we looked forward to and that has fallen away. It was real.”
