American star Katie Ledecky won her twentieth gold at the World Swimming Championships, after being crowned on Tuesday in the 1500-meter freestyle in the Fukuoka World Cup in Japan.
Ledecky scored 15:26.27 minutes, ahead of Italian Simona Quadarella (15:43.31 d) and Chinese Li Bingjie (15:45.71 d).
“The feeling was good. I had a lot of fun this week,” said the 26-year-old swimmer, who clinched her 15th gold in the individual events.
This is Ledecky’s fifth world title in the 1500m race, which she dominates, during which she recorded the 15th fastest time in history.
Ledecky lost her title in 2019 to Quadarilla, when she was forced to withdraw due to illness. She made up for it by winning the title at the Tokyo Olympics, then regaining her world title in Budapest last year.
Ledecky may become the first female swimmer to win the sprint title six times, if she is crowned in the 00m freestyle this week.
And about the secret of her success, Washington’s daughter said, “Hard work and wonderful people by my side.”
And she continued, “The coaches beside me, for more than ten years, really since I started swimming at the age of six, they were wonderful.”
“I have great colleagues right now who motivate me every day. I couldn’t do it without them,” said the seven-time Olympic gold medalist.
Ledecky won a silver medal in Fukuoka, finishing second behind Australian Ariarn Titmus in the 400m freestyle on the opening day of the competition.
