Katia Maciel exhibits at Pinakotheke Cultural

The Pinakotheke Cultural in Rio de Janeiro is hosting the exhibition “Katia Maciel – Um quarto de mar” (Katia Maciel – A room of the sea), featuring four poem-objects from the “Cosmic” series, and a film, all made by the artist especially for the exhibition. The critical text is by award-winning writer Veronica Stigger, who has also curated exhibitions such as “Maria Martins: metamorphoses” and “O uterus do mundo” (MAM SP).

Katia Maciel created a site specific for the space on the second floor of the Pinakotheke Cultural, where the public will be immersed in an environment of the artist’s dreams about the sea, based on a set of four poem-objects from her series “Cosmics”, in mirrors, a white acrylic box with blue printing, and a model of the exhibition, in addition to the film “And every day I dream of the sea” (2024, 28′).

“It’s an intimate exhibition, different from my large-scale installations,” says Katia Maciel. “This time, it’s an installation inspired by the question of dreams.” The large library that covers two walls of the room will be covered in voile, a diaphanous fabric, to create an ethereal atmosphere.

The movie and every day I dream of the sea” (2024, 28′), projected on the front wall of the space, expands into the poem-objects “Same Page” and “Eclipse”, both in mirror with silkscreen printing fixed with silicone; “Infinito”, paper on mirror, all measuring 66 cm x 96 cm each; “Caixa-mar” (2024), a white acrylic box with blue printing, 30 x 43 cm (diptych); and “Maquete” (2024), wood, 19.5 cm x 32.7 cm. All works are from 2024.

In “Same Page”, the idea of negative/positive alludes to the states of sleep/awake, in the fluidity between the states of consciousness and unconsciousness brought about by dreams. The mirror, with its virtual image, reinforces this duality with the real.

“In my work there is always a thought, a reflection on the image and our relationship with it, a perception that the image provokes and that returns to it”, says the artist.

For the first time in her production, Katia Maciel makes a model that reproduces the exhibition space, to reinforce the idea “of a space within a space, not knowing what is a dream and what is real, to create an immersive situation, amplified by the blue color of the film.

The exhibition “Katia Maciel – A room of the sea” can be visited from August 19th to September 14th, at the Pinakotheke Cultural.
