Kate Winslet Shares Behind-the-Scenes Details of Filming “Absurd” Sex Scenes for “The Regime”

The Regime: A Political Satire Miniseries

Kate Winslet, the renowned 48-year-old actress, recently opened up about her experience filming “The Regime,” a political satire miniseries. In the HBO show, Winslet portrays Chancellor Elena Vernham, the authoritarian leader of a fictitious European country. As her regime begins to crumble, Elena develops a twisted love affair with disgraced soldier Herbert Zubak, played by Matthias Schoenaerts.

According to Winslet, filming the raunchy sex scenes with Schoenaerts proved to be “so much fun” that the crew members, including the cinematographer and make-up artist, had to leave the set due to their uncontrollable laughter.

Chemistry and Comfort on Set

Despite the intimate nature of their on-screen relationship, Winslet and Schoenaerts felt at ease during filming. Having previously played lovers in the 2014 period drama “A Little Chaos,” directed by the late Alan Rickman, the duo had developed a strong working relationship and a sense of trust over the years.

“To be honest, Matthias and I know each other so we have a shorthand and a trust that we’ve had for over a decade,” Winslet shared.

Elena and Herbert’s passionate love scenes often turned volatile, with the actors going to great lengths to make each other truly believe in the intensity of their characters’ relationship. Schoenaerts admitted that he aimed to scare his fellow actors and make them believe he could do them harm. Within the context of the storyline, he channeled his character’s aggression to create authentic and engaging performances.

A Step Towards Comedy

Winslet, who has dabbled predominantly in serious roles, saw “The Regime” as an opportunity to delve into the comedy genre. After a series of projects dealing with more weighty themes, she embraced the chance to tackle a role that presented the lighter side of acting. The thrill of being involved in a humorous series, complete with improvisation and laughter-filled scenes, was a breath of fresh air for the acclaimed actress.

Winslet said, “Being ridiculous was such a breath of fresh air… We didn’t get through a scene without wetting ourselves laughing.”

A Complex Female Lead

One aspect that delighted Winslet about “The Regime” was the central focus on a complex female character. She expressed her joy in finding a project that showcased women’s voices and the varied creative approaches they could take. Winslet noted the positive strides made in recent years, as more female-driven pieces continue to emerge and women explore different dimensions of their voices creatively.

Winslet emphasized, “You can’t do any of that unless you are able to get into the vulnerable side too. We see where Elena’s demonic strength comes from and what is underneath.”

Embracing Success

Despite being a globally recognized actress, Winslet prefers not to surround herself with people who are eager to please her. As she explained, she finds it uncomfortable when individuals demonstrate an urge to gain her approval.

Winslet arduously strives to maintain her individuality and independence, self-assured in her ability to follow her own path. She commented, “I’ve become rather good at just doing things my way.”

Currently airing on HBO, “The Regime” allows Winslet and the entire cast to shine in their comedic roles. The miniseries also emphasizes the importance of portraying multifaceted female characters and the evolution of women’s roles within the entertainment industry.
