Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex made a swift exit from the royal family, reportedly leaving Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge to pick up the slack a bit. The Cambridges have been busy so far in 2020 and, according to one report, Kate is happy with having a bigger role in the royal family.
Prince Harry and Meghan left their royal duties behind
In January, the Sussexes shared in an Instagram post their intentions to “step back” from their royal duties, but after Queen Elizabeth met to discuss the specifics of the plan, they left for good. In exchange for their freedom, Prince Harry and Meghan gave up the use of their HRH titles and public funding.
The queen shared in a statement: “Following many months of conversations and more recent discussions, I am pleased that together we have found a constructive and supportive way forward for my grandson and his family. Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved members of my family. I recognise the challenges they have experienced as a result of intense scrutiny over the last two years and support their wish for a more independent life.”
Prince Harry noted during a speech after the details were finalized that he and Meghan felt like they didn’t have any other option.
Are Kate and Prince William picking up the slack?
Once the Sussexes exited the family, it was reported that the Cambridges had to pick up the slack they left behind.
“Harry and Meghan deciding to up sticks and leave without
any thought about how it could affect them is pretty selfish,” a palace source
told The Mirror.
The insider continued: “If the Sussexes are only here half
the year then it will fall to William and Kate to pick up the slack with more
engagements, more pressure, and that has not even been considered.”
Kate is reportedly ‘so happy’ about her role
If there is indeed extra work for the Cambridges, sources say Kate is happy about it. She’s been busy with her survey project about early childhood, which she is clearly invested in.
“Kate is extremely passionate about the work the
Foundation does and she has ideas and plans for how she believes it can be used
to help some of the causes which she is particularly passionate about,” a
source told The Sun.
The insider added: “In recent weeks Kate has visited a
lot of organizations and spoke to lots of experts and has soaked a lot of
information. She wants to use that to go out and bring about change to many of
those who need support.”
“William and Kate may have extra responsibilities in
the wake of Harry and Meghan’s move to Canada but neither of them want that to
be at the expense of their Foundation,” the source shared. “They both work
very closely with the team and Kate is sitting in on more and more meetings so
she can have an input in the work that is going on.”
The Cambridges can focus on the Foundation more now, as the insider shared that it had been “a bit of a tug of war between what William and Harry wanted,” adding, “Now it is purely in the shape of how William and Kate want it to be.”
