Kate Middleton: Getty note on video reignites conspiracy theories – 2024-04-06 12:02:49

The conspiracy theories surrounding Kate Middleton came to rekindle a note by the photo agency Getty Images on the video of the Princess of Wales, with which she addressed the public about her battle with cancer.

In particular, the agency notes on the video in question that “this video clip was provided by a third party and may not comply with Getty Images’ editorial policy.”

“Of course the Kate Middleton video was fake. Getty’s note suggests the video was not real,” wrote a user on X.

Not a few are speculating that Kate Middleton’s video was created with artificial intelligence.

The new speculation about Kate prompted the Getty to explain the reasons behind the note in question. According to the agency, the way the video was flagged is standard practice for content delivered by third parties, in this case Kensington Palace.

It is recalled that the Palace revealed that the BBC studios recorded the video of Kate, just two days before its release. In fact, BBC Studios released a short statement confirming that they shot the video.

Why conspiracy theories persist

Quassim Cassam, a professor of philosophy at Warwick University who specializes in conspiracy theories, explained that such rumors are usually fueled by evidence that refutes them. “They cannot be stopped, because the evidence against them is also being treated as part of the conspiracy,” he pointed out.

On the other hand, Whitney Phillips, an assistant professor of digital platforms and ethics at the University of Oregon in the US, said that many social media users may engage in conspiracy theories for entertainment reasons. “The kind of wild speculation combined with conspiracy theories can also make for a fun mystery. At the same time, it can be a kind of distraction for the participants. Of course, this does not cause much or even any importance for the problem or distress they can cause to those involved”, he noted.

A British disinformation company, Logically, noticed a trend online about conspiracy theories surrounding Kate. More specifically, conspiracy theorists are now converging with those who comment simply for fun. “It’s an opportunity for people who regularly engage in conspiracy theories,” said Joe Ondrak, an analyst at Logically.

An X executive commented that the mainstream media is also responsible for the conspiracy theories that are circulating. That is, they have to “take responsibility” for the “harmful narrative” that is circulating. “The mainstream media has overblown this narrative. Consequently, each of them should take responsibility. He should express his regret and apologize to Kate Middleton and her family. And give them the privacy they deserve,” said Jo Benarroch, X’s head of business.
