The video clip documented the human moments in which the Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton, was keen to console Tunisian tennis star Anas Jaber, after losing in the Wimbledon final to Czech Marketa Vondrousova.
Anas Jaber lost to Marketa Vondrousova 6-4, 6-4, to become the first unseeded player to win the women’s singles title at the Wimbledon Tennis Championships.
After the match, Jaber could not hold back her tears, but Kate Middleton made sure to console her, in a scene that was documented by the cameras.
Middleton appeared while patting Jaber’s arm while talking to her, in an attempt to console her, while her body language reflected great sympathy for the Tunisian tennis star.
In the first comment after the match, Jaber said, while wiping her tears: “This is the most painful loss in my career.”
She added, “It will be a difficult day, but I will not give up and I will come back stronger. It is a difficult journey, but I promise you that I will come back and win this tournament one day.”
Jabeur, who lost to Elena Rybakina in the Wimbledon final and Iga Chiantik in the US Open final last year, entered the match hoping to give the Arabs their first Grand Slam title and be the first African player to win a major title.
What happened in the match?
Under the roof of the main court closed due to the possibility of rain, Jaber started the match perfectly with a 2-0 lead. But Vondrousova, ranked 42nd in the world, regained her composure and forced her opponent to make mistakes to equalise. Jaber responded by leading 4-2, but she seemed nervous and made one mistake after another, to lose 4 games in a row, and Vondrousova clinched the first set. Vondrousova succeeded in breaking her opponent’s serve at the start of the second set and took a 40-0 lead, but Agabir suddenly rose up.
A new Arab star in the tennis sky
Jabeur seemed to find her way back, winning three games in a row, but Vondrousova didn’t lose her nerve. The Czech player was able to equalize 3-3, and with the return of Jaber’s mistakes, Vondrousova succeeded in breaking her opponent’s serve, and advancing 5-4, to become one half away from the title. Vondrousova led 40-0, squandered her first title shot after committing a double fault, but ended the match on the next point.
