Kat Kerkhofs has been living with Dries Mertens in the Italian city of Naples for many years. Italy is about ten days ahead of our country in terms of the coronavirus. The 31-year-old program maker explains in a video on Instagram that she also underestimated the virus in the beginning, but that she now realizes how hard things are going in Italy. “I wouldn’t normally do this, but I feel that the situation is not being taken seriously enough in Belgium. And believe me: I was the first to be skeptical about the coronavirus and I also said it was just a flu until a week ago, but unfortunately Italy taught me it is not. Yesterday there were 368 deaths in one day here and official infections are now estimated at 20,000, but studies show that in reality there are over 100,000 and Belgium is also heading for that, ”it says.
Young people also infected with coronavirus
She emphasizes that not only older people are affected, but also healthy young people and that everyone should follow the measures. “Hospitals are overcrowded here. These are often risk groups, but there are also very healthy young people who become very ill. Help is sometimes refused because there is not enough assistance. The good news is that the Italians are doing their duty. They stay indoors and that is very nice to see. I think that is the only solution. We all need to keep our distance from one another and stay indoors for this virus to stop, ”she concludes.
