showbizThe most beautiful conceivable crowning of their regained love. That will be the baby, a boy, who is expected at the Kerkhofs-Mertens home in the spring. The child of Kat (33) and Dries (34) will receive both Belgian and Italian nationality. But first there is ‘Dancing with the Stars’, which Kat will present together with Gert Verhulst.

Still four months to go before the baby arrives, but Kat Kerkhofs isn’t worried at all. Not even about corona. “I have been vaccinated twice and I do not feel that I will end up in hospital if I contract corona,” she tells Het Nieuwsblad. “I don’t drink a drop of alcohol anymore and of course I watch what I eat, but as my gynaecologist says: I’m not sick, I’m pregnant. If you read the internet, you are not allowed to do anything as a pregnant woman. I really want to create as little drama as possible.”

Kat gives birth in Italy and that also has an advantage. “Our son gets dual citizenship. “I preferred to give birth in Belgium, in my own language. But if I gave birth in Belgium, there is a 99 percent chance that Dries won’t be able to attend. I can already see him taking a plane when the time comes, that won’t work out. I am not allowed to fly for two months before the birth. You often see this with football players, who do not see their pregnant women for two or three months. I get that, but I always find that very sad. That is why we immediately said: We are not going to do that. Dries will be away a lot anyway, so my mom is coming to stay with us for a month. Otherwise I’ll be too lonely. My mother gave birth to two daughters herself and she did it well. She is a real primal mother, without haircuts. I don’t have to deal with my hormones with her.”

Dries’ contract with Napoli expires in May and there is a good chance that the brand new family will have to move. “If I had to choose, I would stay in Naples,” says Kat. “Dries and I have found the way to paradise, a paradise that was hidden in a rough husk. In Belgium we have to divide our time between friends and family. We are happy to do that, but in Naples our life is simpler.”
