Athletes often don’t like to talk about an encouraging defeat, but this one is certainly one as Karolina Muchova amazed the Roland-Garros audience with her game full of variations. More importantly, after defeating the world No. 2 and making the No. 1 falter, the Czech could see that she was capable of achieving great things.
In a press conference, the native of Olomouc preferred to retain the positive, despite the disappointment: “I feel a bit bitter because I was really close to victory. But, if I look at this Roland-Garros as a whole, to be called a Grand Slam finalist is an achievement and a great motivation. It will push me in the future to work and play again to win big titles.”
“Iga is No. 1 and I was so close” – Muchova
Everyone knows how difficult it is to even get in the way of Iga Swiatek at Roland Garros, especially when she leads 1 set to 0 and 3-0 in the second set. Having competed with the mistress of the place seems to have given a big boost of confidence to the world No. 43, far from being defeated.
“Iga is world number 1 and I was so close,” she told reporters. “I now think I can do it (to win a Grand Slam). I know it won’t happen overnight and there are a lot of sacrifices to be made, but I’m ready to make them.
Eyes on Wimbledon
Now, there is no question of rehashing the past for Karolina Muchova. She is already turning to the grass season and in particular Wimbledon, a tournament which corresponds more to her game and which had already succeeded in the past since she had reached the quarter-finals there twice.
Muchova said: “I’m looking forward to playing on grass and fast surfaces, obviously those are the surfaces I like and love the most.”
But, to achieve your goals and prepare for Wimbledon as well as possible, there is no point in running, you have to leave on time for the Roland-Garros finalist: “I need rest to take care of my body. There isn’t a lot of time between the clay and grass season. I was supposed to take part in a tournament in the Netherlands in two days, but I won’t.”
“I haven’t planned yet but maybe I will play a tournament and then Wimbledon,” she continued. “The target is obviously Wimbledon.”
