In a historic political day, representative Karol Cariola, a member of the Communist Party (PC), became the first representative of her party to head the Chamber of Deputies of Chile. This election, which met the Corporation’s governing requirements, marked an important milestone in the country’s political landscape.

The election of the new Board of Directors of the Chamber of Deputy Ministers was chosen according to the guidelines established in article 45 of the Rules of the Chamber. This process, which requires an absolute majority of affirmative votes (at least 78 votes), showed the complexity and importance of political agreements in the current context.

Karol Cariola, representative of district 9 of the Metropolitan Region, covers a wide area that includes associations such as Conchalí, Huechuraba, Cerro Navia, Renca, Lo Prado, Recoleta, Independencia and Quinta Normal. Her political career dates back to her years as a student at the University of Concepción, where she stood out in leadership positions in the Student Center and later as secretary general of the Youth Communist.

Since coming to Congress in 2013, Karol Cariola has played an active and enthusiastic role in the demands of her community and the country in general. Her election as President of the Chamber of Deputies is not only a recognition of her political work but also a reflection of the ideological and representational diversity that seeks to strengthen the democratic system of Chile.

In her opening speech as President of the Chamber, Karol Cariola emphasized her commitment to the country’s institutions and democracy, reaffirming the importance of working in unity for the well-being of all Chileans. In addition, he highlighted the need for cooperation between political forces to promote major reforms that will improve the quality of life of citizens and strengthen security in the country.

The election of the Vice-Presidents, Gaspar Rivas and Eric Aedo, representatives of different sectors and political parties, also shows the diversity and consensus necessary for the effective operation of the Chilean Congress.

The appointment of Karol Cariola as President of the Chamber of Deputies of Chile marks a key moment in the country’s political history, demonstrating the potential for dialogue and agreement between different political forces for the general benefit of Chilean society.
