On Wednesday, with a unanimous vote of the Competition Committee of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), member of the Competition Council (KP) Kārlis Pigēns was elected to the office of the OECD Competition Committee, KP informs.
Pigėnas’ work in the office to participate in the development of the OECD competition policy program and agenda will begin in 2024.
At the same time, representatives from Japan, Canada, Great Britain, Australia, France, Brazil, Portugal, the European Union Competition Law Institution, Spain, South Korea, Mexico, Sweden, Greece, Colombia, Germany, Norway and Lithuania were also elected to the committee.
The last time the Latvian Competition Council was represented in the office of the OECD Competition Committee was in 2018, when the previous head of the KP Skaidrīte Ābrama was elected to the organization, thus becoming the first Eastern European representative in the office.
OECD is an intergovernmental organization founded in 1961, which unites 38 of the most developed countries in the world. Its headquarters are located in Paris, France. On July 1, 2016, Latvia became the 35th member state of the OECD.
The mission of the OECD is to create and popularize reforms that improve the standard of living and socio-economic conditions of the population, as well as the competitiveness of the economy. In order to achieve this goal, the OECD, together with national governments and policy makers, develops international guidelines and standards with the aim of promoting sustainable development and finding answers to current global challenges. The work of the OECD is organized in thematic committees, including the Competition Committee dedicated to competition law.
