Karl Tremblay will be celebrated at the Bell Center

Karl Tremblay will be entitled to a major national tribute ceremony, confirmed Prime Minister François Legault. The singer of the Cowboys Fringants, whose death affected the whole of Quebec, will be celebrated in a place where he thrilled thousands of Quebecers several times over the last 20 years: the Bell Centre.

These are therefore not “national funerals”, but rather “a national tribute ceremony” which will be reserved for the singer, “in accordance with the wishes expressed by the family of Mr. Karl Tremblay”, indicated the government in a communicated.

This ceremony will be held on Tuesday, November 28, at 7 p.m., at the Bell Center. A limited number of free passes will be offered to the general public starting this Thursday, 10 a.m., on the Ticketmaster website. There will be a limit of four tickets per transaction for this event.

Even if it was not possible to obtain more information on this ceremony from the Cowboys entourage, we can read on Ticketmaster that the event will include the screening of the film America cries on giant screen. There will also be some songs accompanied by OSM musicians. The Cowboys lyricist and guitarist and great friend of Karl Tremblay, Jean-François Pauzé, will also speak.

Same status

Following the singer’s death last week, François Legault publicly expressed the wish to hold a national funeral if the family accepted.

On Wednesday, Mr. Legault’s office clarified that the formula that was chosen, a “national tribute ceremony”, has “the same status” as a national funeral.

“It is the family’s choice not to hold a religious ceremony, quite simply,” said the Prime Minister’s press secretary, Ewan Sauves, adding that the same type of tribute had been organized to honor Lise Payette after his death.

“It affects us all”

For the Minister of the French Language, Jean-François Roberge, this initiative is an “excellent thing”.

“The death of Karl Tremblay, the music of the Cowboys, it affects us all. I think it’s a very good idea,” he said after leaving the Council of Ministers.

“It’s a great idea for the family,” argued the Minister of Culture, Mathieu Lacombe, who finds it “interesting” to make this type of tribute. “It’s a death that affected so many Quebecers,” he said.

At the time of writing, we have not had confirmation whether a funeral will still take place at another time.

“A huge shock throughout Quebec”

François Legault also announced the posting online of a register of condolences. Those who wish to offer a testimony to the family of Karl Tremblay can do so at www.Québec.ca/condoléances.

“The death of Karl Tremblay caused a huge shock throughout Quebec,” François Legault said in a press release. We have lost a great artist, above all a great Quebecer, whose voice marked our nation and an entire generation of Quebecers. […] In agreement with his partner Marie-Annick and all his loved ones, the Quebec nation will pay a national tribute to this artist so loved by Quebecers and to the immense legacy he leaves in our culture.

Attached to the Bell Center

The choice of the Bell Center to hold this ceremony is not insignificant. In their career, the Cowboys Fringants have played there no less than nine times. Their very last visit to the Canadiens amphitheater dates back to January 6.

It was on December 30, 2003 that the Repentigny group filled this imposing arena for the first time. The legendary event was also immortalized on DVD.

A big Habs fan, Karl Tremblay also received a touching tribute at the Bell Center on November 16, before the match between the Canadian and the Las Vegas Golden Knights. We played the song there Shooting Stars while a blue-white-red jersey with the number 76, that of Karl Tremblay, was posted at center ice.
