Kariņš Special Flights: 2021-2023 and the Impact of the Pandemic

This money was spent on 18 special flights in which Kariņš went with delegations of five to nine people to countries such as Belgium, Slovenia, Germany, France, Portugal, Great Britain, Slovakia, the Netherlands, Denmark, the Czech Republic, Poland, Moldova and others.

Clearly, a large amount of money was spent. Everyone immediately remembers Kariņa’s 2019 quote “there is more money than ever”, look at all the sectors that are critically lacking in funding, and the mood of the public is natural. The criticism is deserved.

But, as always, I want to look at this in a slightly wider context and space. Not justifying additional spending at a time when the country is short of money, but trying to understand.

So – the beginning of 2021 until September 2023. Was this as normal a time as 2011 to 2013? Or did different things happen in the world that made life a little more complicated?

2021 was the year of the pandemic. The end of the second wave of covid and the beginning of the third wave, followed by the declaration of a state of emergency in the country and a stay at home. I don’t know how intense air traffic was at the peak of the pandemic, but I will make a bold assumption that there were slightly fewer flights than under normal conditions.
