The Damen sisters launched their own collection on 13 October via a webshop. “After a successful start, we received more questions from people to feel or see the clothing in real life. That’s how the idea arose to organize a pop-up on Saturday and Sunday,” says Kirsten.
When designing their first four models, Kirsten and Karen kept an important point in mind. “We have to like our designs ourselves and we have to like wearing them ourselves.”
Belgian
The step to own fashion label came quite simply. “We found it so difficult to find a black turtleneck sweater that we decided to make one ourselves. This sweater is now the best-selling of our collection. Our designs are made in Belgium, as are the labels for our sweaters and the boxes to ship the orders,” Kirsten says.
The sustainable character is reflected in the materials. “We only work with pure and natural materials. Our Karolien, because all models have been given a women’s name, is made from 95% recycled cashmere. The yarn comes from Italy and Scotland.”
There is something to be said about these women’s names. “The models were given the names of women from our circle of friends who inspire us. In addition to the Karolien do we have the Ethel, from Stephanie and the Amy. But the woman who inspires us the most is of course our mom, Christina. Because our two first names start with a K, we chose KristinaKnitwear as a brand name.”
Kirsten used to follow fashion for two years during her school career. She also worked in the textile sector for a while. But for Karen, a new world opened up. “I couldn’t do this without my sister. She has the passion and knowledge while I can provide a large reach. We complement each other perfectly. It is very nice and we are already working on a second collection. But we don’t put a deadline on it. If we have something nice, we will launch it,” Karen announces.
