Actor Karel Roden celebrates his 60th birthday. He is best known for his films Lidice, Hlídač č. 47, Habermannův mlýn, Alois Nebel and Masaryk, but he is also famous for his foreign work. In his free time, he likes to paint or plant trees. Look back at the roles of a movie giant.
Karel Roden, a native of České Budějovice, celebrates his 60th birthday on May 18. “On this occasion, Mayor Jiří Svoboda wished him not only many other artistic opportunities, but also health, a good vine harvest, painting invention and zeal for the coming years,” the city of České Budějovice wrote on its Facebook page.
Roden is a leading Czech actor who has acted in several dozen domestic films such as Time of Servants, Masseba, Corpus delicti, Don Gio, Pan Tau, Sand Castle, King Ubu, Masaryk, Traps, Traps, Traps, Dvojrole or Chicken Melancholic. However, he began his film career in 1983 in the film Castle Infinity. A year later, it became known to the audience thanks to the role of Honza in the film How Poets Lose Illusions, and three years later also in a sequel entitled How Poets Enjoy Life.
Another important role is that of Captain Tůma from the film What is a Soldier? Roden has also starred in a number of fairy tales, such as Princess Fantaghiró 2, The Dragon Ring, The Firebird or the drama Bouquet.
In 2010, director Juraj Herz made the film Habermann’s Mill, where Roden played a friend of the German industrialist Habermann, Karel Březina. A year later, he also shone in the film Alois Nebel, which was shot using a non-traditional rotoscopy animation technique, in which the filmmakers first shot scenes with actors and then were drawn.

He also appeared in the main role of Josef Douš in the film Guardian No. 47, which is a railway guard who will one day save a young man from jumping under a train. However, the rescued man falls in love with Douš’s wife after the incident. He also played a major role in the film Lidice, which was so successful that he received five nominations for the Czech Lion.
Foreign production
Karel Roden is one of the few Czech actors who have managed to establish themselves on the international stage. In 1999, he appeared in the first foreign film, the Italian-German miniseries Pirates, where he played one of the important characters in the pirate crew. His first Hollywood role was the criminal Emil Slovak in the action thriller 15 Minutes, where his rival was Robert De Niro, who allegedly chose him for the film. He also appeared in the American action films Blade 2, Bulletproof Monk and Hellboy. He starred with Rowan Atkinson in the comedy Mr. Bean’s Holidays. In 2008, he played the role of Russian businessman Uri Omovich in British director Guy Ritchie’s film RocknRoll.

Valuation
Roden was nominated seven times for the Czech Lion for male acting in the lead role and a total of four times for the award for male acting in the supporting role. He received the award twice – for Hlídače No. 47 and for Masaryk. He was nominated twice for the Czech Film Critics Award – he changed his only nomination in 2010 for the film Habermann’s Mill.
In addition to acting, Roden also likes to paint, ride horses or plant trees. His great hobby is also viticulture. It also has its own wine brand, which it offers in selected restaurants and wine shops.

He dated for a while with Ivana Chýlková, then with Jana Krausová. This was later replaced by the nice dentist Laura Čekanová, whom Roden married. Together they have two children, a daughter Sofia and a son Karel.
