Karel Gott’s businessman, benefactor and North American manager, Jiří George Suchánek, returned to the Czech Republic for the first time since the funeral. During his trip, he is going not only to the Master’s grave, but also to the widow Ivana Gottová.

Jiří George Suchánek has not been in the Czech Republic since 2019, when the last farewell to Karl Gott took place. “There was the crazy covid and it just wasn’t possible. I’m glad that this is behind us,” confided the manager of the well-known Blesk singer. During his stay in Prague, the businessman plans to visit the grave of Gott and his wife Ivana, with whom he is in regular contact.

“My wife and I want to see friends, we will also go to Moravia. And most of all, I want to go to Karl’s grave in Malvazinky and see Ivana. We are in regular contact, now I would like to find out with her and Olga Špátová if they have a copy of the document about Káj, which I would like to release to my compatriots in New York,” Suchánek plans. “If the documentary is already on DVD, I’ll take it across the ocean. We still have to settle the rights with Bontonfilm,” added Gott’s colleague and friend.

Among other things, Suchánek also described the last meeting with Karl Gott, which took place two years before his death. “I think it was sometime in 2017, it was an exhibition in Prague on the ship Gott, My Life, which we went to see. I knew that Karel was no longer at his best, so I didn’t want to bother him. And suddenly my phone rings, František Jirásek, Káj’s photographer, appeared on the display. I picked up the call and said: Hi, Fando! And Karel answered and said: You’re a friend!” recalled the manager, still reeling from Gott’s death.

Charlotte always said that America was her dream

“The meeting was very friendly. Charlotte kept saying that America was her dream. It was very nice and we sat sometimes until midnight. Ivana then offered to accompany me out, but Karel told her that he would go. We said goodbye at door, I called for an elevator, and he suddenly got into it and went down with me. We went out into the street and talked for another forty minutes. It was a little after one o’clock, and he suddenly looked both ways, grabbed me by the neck and started to cry…,” Jiří George Suchánek cried while talking about Gott.

“That was very strong. I cried too and Karel says to me: You know, Jirko, we’ve been friends for all these years. What we’ve been through… I saw that he wasn’t well. Every step, the pain. That’s why I suspected that this may be the last time we see each other,” added the businessman brokenly.

“Karel died and with him a piece of my life. I miss him very much and I think most of the Czech society does too. I listen to his music regularly. And I remember the good things we experienced together. For example, when in the second half of the 1950s performed with our band and used the pseudonym František Matějíček. I then revealed it somewhere and he scolded me for it,” concluded Suchánek.
