Three years have passed since his murder Giorgos Karaivazwith seven organizations for the Freedom of Press to address yet another appeal to the Greek Authorities to clarify the case by referring the perpetrators to Justice.
“Despite the arrest of two suspects in April 2023, shortly before the national elections, there has been no substantial progress in the case. Judging by the fact that Karaivaz had mentioned in his reports the connection between the police and organized crime, there is a risk that some parties, especially the police, do not want the progress of the investigations”is highlighted in the text signed by the Organizations IPI, ARTICLE 19, ECPMF, EFJ, FPU, OBCT.
“Despite continuous calls for transparency, in line with European standards, the Greek authorities have failed to close the case. The weakness of Greece in terms of the administration of justice, dictates the need to “strengthen” the investigations as well as the implementation of the measures proposed by the Commission concerning the safety of journalists”. also highlighted in the text.
“We express our concern regarding the inability to identify and prosecute the perpetrators. Once again, we call on the Greek authorities to intensify the investigations and find those responsible for the heinous crime”concludes the text of the Organizations for the Freedom of the Press.
