Milan is a city that never ceases to amaze with its gastronomic offerings. Among the many Japanese restaurants present, Kappou Ninomiya stands out for its authenticity and sophistication.

Here he has opted for an understated and refined design, with light wood furnishings and cream tones. The simplicity of the setting is designed to highlight the real star: the counter, where a dozen diners can sit and watch Chef Ninomiya at workin an experience reminiscent of kappou restaurants in Japan.

The term “kappa” in fact means “cutting and cooking,” indicating a type of Japanese multi-course meal prepared directly by the chef in front of diners. This style of cooking lies somewhere between the sophistication of kaiseki haute cuisine and the informality of an izakaya, a Japanese eatery/pub.

Kappou Ninomiya perfectly embodies these characteristics, offering an intimate and cozy experience.

Kappou Ninomiya’s menu is a true excursion into Japanese culinary tradition, with a wide range of dishes from appetizers to desserts. At lunch, the menu is slightly smaller than at dinner, but still offers a selection of dishes that will satisfy even the most discerning palates.

Japanese lunches

At lunch you can enjoy classic sashimiwhose freshness you will appreciate, the typical teishoku, lunch sets that include a main dish accompanied by steamed rice, pickled vegetables, and miso soup. Highly recommended is the Jubako Kaisen Special: mixed sashimi, red shrimp and salmon roe on a bed of rice in a jubako box, bento-like boxes. And The Subbirice balls stuffed with salmon or tuna (there is also a vegan version with plum), wrapped in nori seaweed.

At dinnertime, Kappou Ninomiya’s menu is enriched with elaborate dishes. The maki offering becomes really interesting and we recommend you try the Maki Negitoro. Among the cold dishes, you will find a selection of sushi and sashimi of the highest qualitywith fine cuts of fish. There is also no shortage of hot dishes, such as dashimaki (Japanese omelet made with egg and dashi broth) and marinated octopus with wasabi.

At Kappou Ninomiya, the counter is the real deal

Sitting at the counter at Kappou Ninomiya is an experience you should not miss for several reasons. First, make a reservation in advance and ask to be seated at the counter.

Dinner at that point will not only be eating, but it will also be mostly admiring the movements with which the master prepares the various dishes and cuts the fish in an incredible way. This will also allow you to discover other dishes being prepared for other tables and, why not, decide to try them.

Of the quality of the fish and all the products there is no need to talk about it because everything is of the highest standard. Kappou Ninomiya is undoubtedly among the Japanese restaurants in Milan to try at least once. Its varied culinary offerings, intimate atmosphere and excellent quality of dishes make it a must-visit destination for fans of Japanese cuisine.
