For more than 50 years, Kanuk has imagined and created outerwear designed to protect against extreme weather conditions. Durably designed, the iconic Montreal brand is renowned for its quality and durability, and each item comes with a lifetime warranty. From its very beginnings, Kanuk’s original boutique and workshop have stood the test of time alongside the brand’s unbeatable craftsmanship. The label has only recently decided to expand internationally, and has already gained the attention of world-class retailers including SSENSE, United Arrows and Holt Renfrew, among others. Kanuk’s expansion into the United States is a natural next step for the brand. In order to pay homage to Kanuk’s past and legacy, the store at New York is designed to reflect the spirit of Montreal by combining the brand’s history with its continued evolution.

“Kanuk has been making its coats locally for over 50 years. Today, we are delighted to announce that we are taking one more step in bringing meticulous Canadian craftsmanship to an international market, ”said Richard Laniel, president of Kanuk. “Our new SoHo store is an exciting new chapter in our evolution from a small manufacturer of outerwear to a world-renowned Canadian brand. SoHo being a reinvented neighborhood centered on arts, fashion and architecture, it perfectly reflects Kanuk’s on-trend outerwear, and we’re so glad we found an address on Greene Street. “
Designed by the renowned architectural studio Atelier Barda, the space (4,000 sq. Ft.) Lends itself to a sensory experience that evokes the urban utopia emblematic of Montreal’s winter climate. Upon arrival, visitors enter through a narrow passage anchored by a free-standing altar as they gravitate towards the main section. The white-domed room showcasing Kanuk’s collections is illuminated by point-and-controlled lighting created by the New York studio Derek Porter and James Clotfelter Lighting Design, in collaboration with Atelier Barda. Inspired by the art installations of Doug Wheeler and James Turell, the use of light blurs the boundaries of architecture, creating the illusion that the coats are hanging around the room. The full height monochrome curtains of the dressing rooms complete the visitor experience.
“Inspired by the retro-cult character of Montreal, the team of designers drew on the idealistic vision of the 60s and 70s which transformed the urban face of Montreal at that time and which still inhabits the city today,” explains Cécile Combelle, co-founder of Atelier Barda. “The tension between utopia and nostalgia was something we wanted to explore in order to design a space that freely reinterprets Kanuk’s story as well as its current evolution. “
Kanuk’s New York boutique will premiere the brand’s Fall / Winter 2021 outerwear collection. The collection combines the brand’s mastery of winter warmth with modern, avant-garde designs, ranging from functional puffers in microfloral prints to parkas in vibrant tangy hues. Buyers will also be able to discover exclusive styles on site. Additionally, the store will offer the brand’s first transitional collection, named Kanuk +0, designed for milder weather and unveiled this fall.
Kanuk has also discreetly introduced eco-innovations into its collections using a thoughtful and authentic approach to the brand. It has completely withdrawn from the fur industry this year, which has been a gradual process out of respect for the resource. In addition, today, more than 50% of their collections are made with recycled fabrics, and the brand is committed to increasing this percentage in the years to come.
