This weekend looks like it will be a good day for skiing in the Kanto area. The snow and wind will not be strong, and there will be some sunshine. Temperatures will rise next week, and we need to be careful about avalanches and melting snow.

Many places have good skiing weather this weekend

This weekend, the strong winter-like atmospheric pressure distribution near Japan is expected to ease. It will snow on the 27th (Saturday) at ski resorts in Niigata, Aizu, and northern Kanto, and it will continue to snow on the 28th (Sunday) in the Niigata area, but the snow and wind are not expected to be as strong as they have been in the past few days. . However, please be very careful when driving in snowy areas.
On the other hand, in the Nagano area, there will be some sunshine from Saturday to Sunday morning, making it a good day for skiing. The sun’s rays reflect off the snow, so it’s a good idea to wear sunglasses.

As of noon today (26th), avalanche warnings have been issued for northern Tochigi prefecture, northern Gunma prefecture, northern and central Nagano prefecture, Aizu region of Fukushima prefecture, and Niigata prefecture. Please be careful until tomorrow, the 27th (Saturday).

Next week, temperatures will be high, so be careful of avalanches

Next week, the area around Japan will be covered with warm air, so we will need to be even more careful about avalanches.
Yesterday (25th), “early weather information regarding high temperatures” was announced from Tohoku to Kyushu, Amami, and Okinawa. Temperatures may become “significantly higher” than normal from around February 1st in the Kanto-Koshin region and from around February 3rd in the Tohoku and Hokuriku regions. In areas with heavy snowfall, there is a risk that the snow will melt rapidly. You need to be careful about avalanches.

Please follow the instructions on the ski slopes. There is a risk of avalanches occurring off trails and in uncontrolled areas outside of ski resorts. Please enjoy skiing in a safe place.

What should I be careful about when the snow suddenly melts?

As the weather gets warmer, we are worried about disasters and accidents caused by melting snow. In areas where there is a lot of snow, you need to be careful of the following three points.

① “Full-thickness avalanches” are more likely to occur due to melting snow. This is a phenomenon in which all the snow that has piled up on a mountain slides down, and it often occurs when the temperature rises or after rain. Be especially careful on slopes where avalanches have occurred in the past or where there are cracks in the snowpack.

② Rising temperatures will cause accumulated snow to slip, making it more likely that snow will fall from the roof. When working under the eaves, be careful and check the situation above your head. Also, when removing snow, be sure to ensure safety by wearing a lifeline and helmet, and having more than one person do the work if possible.

③ If the temperature rises or it rains on roads covered with a lot of snow, there is a risk of flooding. This is because snow that collects on the roadside can impede drainage, and snow particles can block drainage ditches. If it rains after heavy snow, even if it is not a heavy rain, please be careful about flooding of roads.
