One of the most beautiful ballads in rock music is a song from 1977. “Dust In The Wind” was released on the album “Point Of Know Return” by the American band Kansas. Back in the fall, guitarist Kerry Livgren was just on tour with his rock band Kansas. He enjoys the free time with his wife Vicky, reads a book about the poetry of the Indians and plays a little on the guitar in his music room. He wants to acquire a new playing technique – the so-called “Travis Picking”, named after the American country musician Merle Travis.
Inspired by Native American poetry
A big challenge for the seasoned rock guitarist who otherwise prefers loud and heavy music. But Kerry tries hard and even develops her own finger exercises. And while Kerry concentrates, a sentence from the book on Native American poetry that he read earlier comes to mind: “All we are is dust in the wind” – “We are just dust in the wind.” This thought fascinates him – what are wealth and success really worth if we all come back to earth in the end? And while he is playing the guitar, he begins to compose: “I close my eyes. Just for a moment. And the moment is over again. All my dreams play out strangely before my eyes. Dust in the wind. We are just Dust in the wind! “
“Dust In The Wind” is going to be a classic
A few weeks later the band meets to rehearse the songs for the new album. However, they are still missing one song. That’s why Kerry plays “Dust In The Wind” to his bandmates, although he doesn’t think much of the song himself because it’s not typically Kansas. “It’s not rock music!” He thinks. But he is alone with his opinion. The boys are absolutely thrilled. And they are all right. “Dust In The Wind” is not only going to be Kansas’ biggest hit, it’s going to be a classic!
